Overview

Most of the mathematicians at the Camille Jordan Institute teach at University or in Engineering Schools. They contribute to a wide education offer in mathematics, at all the levels of the higher education system.

Main features

  • Undergraduate studies start right after the baccalauréat; students can prepare for a bachelor degree in mathematics or/and admission contests of engineering schools; curricula also include various optional modules in physics, mechanics, economy, biology.
  • Students from `classes préparatoires aux grandes écoles’ (CPGE) can be admitted in the second or third year depending on their earlier results.
  • Students from nearby engineering schools can take the bachelor degree in mathematics in parallel.
  • Graduate studies include two masters in mathematics (`mention Mathématiques et applications’ or `Mathématiques appliquées, statistique’); students are required to have passed a bachelor degree in mathematics or to already be studying in an engineering school.
  • Students can prepare for teachers hiring contests (CAPES, agrégation),
  • Research training, starting at undergraduate level for the most skilled students,
  • More than 80 faculty members officially allowed to advise doctoral students.

Career opportunities in the field of mathematics

  • Becoming a teacher after passing a contest (professeur des écoles, CAPES, or agrégation).
  • Researcher or professor after a master degree and a doctoral thesis. NB In order to apply for a permanent professor position, it is mandatory to be officially `qualified’ (see the French Ministry of Education website for more information on the procedure)
  • Mathematical engineer (statistics, computer science, scientific computing,…) with a master degree or a mathematically oriented engineer degree, and work in the pharmaceutical or chemical industry, the banking sector and more generally the tertiary sector, the major institutions of public and private research, etc.
