16h00-17h00 : Jim Ritter (Paris).
Henri Eyraud élève de Weyl (titre à préciser).
Vendredi 6 mai (salle 112, bâtiment Braconnier)
10h-11h : Erhard Scholz (Wuppertal).
Weyl's way of posing the `Raumproblem' in terms of infinitesimal geometry.
In a recent dissertation J. Bernard (Aix en Provence) analyzed Weyl's "Nahegeometrie" as an answer to the question of how to bridge the gap between the postulate of a kind of `homogeneity' of a mathematical concept of space and Einstein's view binding the (Lorentzian) metric of differential geometry to the heterogeneous material content of 'the world'. This motif was close to E. Cartan's, when he proposed his generalized spaces as an infinitesimal version of Kleinian geometry. Weyl gave a slightly different mathematical solution to his closely related conceptual problem. In the talk I shall outline Weyl's answer developed in his talks and publication widely known under the classical name of `mathematical analysis of the problem of space'. Of course, this phrase meant something quite different to what one would understand under it in the last third of the 19th century.
11h15-12h15 : Martina Schneider (Mainz).
Hermann Weyl and Bartel van der Waerden – differences and similarities in their studies on group theory and quantum mechanics.
The two mathematicians, Hermann Weyl and Bartel van der Waerden, were among the pioneers who explored the usefulness of the group theoretic method in quantum mechanics in the late 1920s and early 1930s. In my talk, I will sketch the early development of group theoretic methods in quantum mechanics as well as the reception, and compare Weyl’s and van der Waerden’s approaches and roles. In order to show the complexity of the interplay of mathematics and physics at work in this field, the research of the physicist Eugene Wigner is also touched upon.
14h-15h : Norbert Schappacher (Strasbourg).
