Math

I'm interested on the interaction between differential algebra and model theory. Currently, my work is focused on developing extensions of Kolchin's Differential Galois Theory to more general contexts using geometric stability methods. In my dissertation (pdf) I played with positive characteristic iterative differential fields. I'm now refining this work (looking at the possibility of a generalized positive characteristic strongly normal theory, for instance) and also exploring how feasible would it be to transfer my results to positive characteristic difference-differential fields, whatever that means. I'd also like to understand the connection between p-adic differential equations and iterative differential equations at the non-linear (strongly normal) level.

Fiction

I write fiction. A collection of some of my short stories entitled Lo definitivo y lo temporal was published by Fondo Editorial EAFIT on October 2008. I also write vague movie reviews for Ochoymedio.info and belong to the editorial team of HermanoCerdo, an e-magazine in Spanish on literature and martial arts.

Additionally, I've written articles on literature, cinema and the like for Pie de Página, El Malpensante, The Quarterly Conversation and Arcadia. Recently, I started to write every two weeks an op-ed on digital culture, science and society for the Colombian national newspaper El Espectador.

I blog at Balada del elefante azul.

I was born in Bogotá, Colombia. I grew up in Lorica, Colombia. I am left handed. I endured the rigours of military training. I like ninjas, robots, structure, parallelisms, brevity, mojitos and friendship. I am an advocate of open culture. I believe that science, technology and mathematics should be accesible for everyone. I have lived in too many places already. I rather prefer to stay at home. I take pictures. I am married to Mónica Guzmán. She is a neuroscientist with a weakness for neurodegenerative dissorders. Plinio is the name of our Spanish cat. He is an antropologist, sociologist and diletante who was allegedly born in 1903. In London, Ontario, where Mónica now lives, we adopted Gonta, our second cat. He is a survivor. We enjoy cooking, reading, walking around and talking to animals.

Academic Bio

I did my undergrad at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. Then, I went to Urbana, Illinois, to pursue graduate studies. While writing my dissertation, I spent some time in Leeds, UK, and Barcelona, Spain. I'm now a postdoctoral researcher at the Institut Camille Jordan, Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1.
