• 1971: Agrégation de mathématiques.
  It enabled me to teach in secondary school, but I never did it:
  I love mathematics too much to hurt people with it.
• 1971: Thèse de troisième cycle.
  This got hired me in CNRS one year later;
  some very famous colleagues entered CNRS without even a first thesis.
  The times, they have been a' changin'.
• 1979: Thèse d'état.

  conférences (associate professor), Ecole Centrale de Lyon; he defended his "Habilitation à diriger des recherches" in 2002;
• Soumaia Benhadid, new thesis, Lyon 1, 1990, she teaches at Annaba (Algeria);
• Laetitia Paoli, new thesis, Lyon 1, 1993, presently maître de conférences
  (associate professor), Université de Saint-Etienne;
  she defends her "habilitation à diriger des recherches" on December 15th, 2000; she is a full professor at the University of Saint-Etienne since 2002;
• Abderraouf Tlili, new thesis, Lyon 1, 1994; he teaches at Tunis;
• Boun Oumar Dia, new thesis, Lyon 1, 1996;
• Fatima Nqi, new thesis, Lyon 1, 1997; now she teaches financial mathematics at the University of Oujda (Morocco);
• Stéphane Descombes, new thesis, Lyon 1, 1998, maître de conférences (associate professor),
  Ecole Normale Supérieure, Lyon;
• Messaoud Kolli, new thesis, Lyon 1, 1999; he teaches at the University of Setif (Algeria);
• Jérôme Bastien, new thesis, Lyon 1, 2000;
  he is a professor agrégé (assistant professor) at the Technical Université of Belfort since 2000 and a maître de conférences there since 2001.
• Adrien Petrov, new thesis, Lyon 1, 2002. He is a post-doc in Lisbon (Portugal) from October 2003.

Administrative responsabilities:

• 1999-2002: chair UMR5585, now called "Laboratoire de Mathématiques Appliquées de Lyon" or MAPLY; it associates CNRS, Université Claude-Bernard Lyon 1, INSA de Lyon and Ecole Centrale de Lyon.
• 1995-1998: Chair of UMR5585 (previously URA 740)
  ``Equipe d'Analyse Numérique Lyon - Saint-Etienne'', a research group associating CNRS,
  and four schools: Université Claude Bernard - Lyon 1,
  l'Ecole Centrale de Lyon, l'INSA (Institut national des Sciences Appliquées)
  de Lyon (both are engineering schools)
  and Université Jean Monnet de Saint-Etienne.
• 1991-1995: Chair of the graduate program in Numerical Analysis,
  Partial Differential equations and Scientific Computation,
  a joint operation between Ecole Normale supérieure de Lyon, Ecole Centrale de Lyon,
  Université Claude Bernard - Lyon 1,
  and Université Jean Monnet de Saint-Etienne.
• Member of several hiring committees.
• Member of the mathematics section of the Comité National de la
  Recherche Scientifique from 1976 to 1981 and from 1983 to 1986.
