Mathematical logic, in particular model theory and its applications in
algebra
Born 1964 in Bad Säckingen. 1983 gold medal at the International Mathematical Olympics in Paris, admission into the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes. 1984-1986 undergraduate studies in Heidelberg (1986 Vordiplom in mathematics and in physics), 1986-1990 postgraduate studies in Oxford under the supervision of professor A. Macintyre (1990 graduation to DPhil). Postdoctoral positions at MSRI Berkeley and McGill University Montreal; 1991-1993 research assistant at the Institute for Mathematical Logic and Foundations of Mathematics at the University of Freiburg; 1993 Habilitation under the direction of professor M. Ziegler. 1993-1997 temporary University Lecturer in mathematical logic at the University of Oxford, fellow of St. Catherine's College and lecturer at Worcester College; 1997 visitor at the Fields Institute for Research in the Mathematical Sciences Toronto; 1998-1999 Heisenberg fellow of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft at MSRI and the University of Oxford. Since 1999 professor 2nd class at the University Claude Bernard at Lyon; director of the Doctoral School MathIF (Mathématiques - Informatique Fondamentale) 2002 - 2006. Appointed junior member of the Institut universitaire de France in 2002. Member of the Executive Committee of the Association for Symbolic Logic 2003 - 2005, and of the National Committee of the CNRS 2003 - 2004. Member of the committee of deontology of the University Claude Bernard 2003. Promoted to professor 1st class in 2003. Chairman of the hiring committee in pure an applied mathematices 2004 - 2006. Director of the Camille Jordan Institute 2007-2010. Appointed Knight of the Order of the Palmes Académiques in 2008. Member of the National Council of Universities, mathematics section, for 2010/2011.
